When you meet Hamish Curd, it doesn’t take long to figure out two things: he’s passionate about racing, and he’s a guy who gets stuck in to make things happen. A New Plymouth-based engineer, family man, and die-hard stockcar racer, Hamish has recently jumped back into the driver’s seat after a break from the sport. With a rebuilt car, a drive to compete, and a little help from Container Space, he’s ready to take on the season ahead.

We caught up with Hamish to chat about his love for racing, what brought him back, and why a shipping container turned out to be the perfect solution for his racing setup.

Born into speedway

Hamish’s love for speedway runs deep – it’s in his blood. “Dad used to race stockcars at Stratford Speedway years ago, and I was basically born into it,” he says. From racing karts as a kid to travelling all over the North Island with his parents on weekends, Hamish’s early years revolved around motorsport.

In his late teens and early twenties, he moved into stockcar racing, but life took him in a different direction for a while. Now, with two young daughters and a supportive wife, he’s back at it after being reunited with his old companion – his original stockcar.

“I’d built this car and ended up selling it. It was a tough decision to let it go. Then this year, out of nowhere came the opportunity to buy it back. It just felt like there was unfinished business, you know? Right place, right time – everything fell into place,” he explains.

The thrill of stockcars

If you’re unfamiliar with New Zealand stockcar racing, Hamish sums it up perfectly: “They’re iconic here. Fully steel-fabricated cars with a Ford Falcon motor, built from scratch with the components you choose. It’s rough, it’s aggressive, and it’s a heap of fun.”

Stockcars are designed to handle some serious contact – and that’s part of the appeal. “The rough-and-tumble side of it is what makes it special,” Hamish says. “You can go out there, be competitive, maybe even enemies on the track, but then have a beer with your mates afterwards. It’s the social side and the community that makes it so unique.”

This season, Hamish’s main focus is on reliability and getting his confidence back. “I’ve pretty much gone over the whole car from head to toe three times,” he laughs. “It’s a rebuilding season, but I’ve got my eye on the New Zealand Champs in Wellington in January.”

The need for space

Stockcar racing isn’t just about the car – it’s everything that comes with it. “There are spares, tyres, and tools. You end up with so much gear, and it takes up a ton of space,” Hamish says.

Limited by the space at home, he started looking for storage solutions but quickly ran into roadblocks. “I wasn’t keen on getting a shed somewhere away from home, so I started looking

into containers. But honestly, it was harder than I thought to organise. I’d call places, get put on hold, wait for callbacks that never came – it was a hassle.”

That’s when Hamish got in touch with Container Space.

“The team at Container Space made it so easy. One phone call, and it was all sorted. They just got it done, no mucking around. The shipping container was delivered in a few days – easy as,” Hamish says.

The container now holds all Hamish’s gear and keeps everything close to home. But the partnership didn’t stop there.

A natural partnership

After sorting his storage, Hamish floated the idea of sponsorship with Nick – and it turned out to be a perfect fit. “It was great to team up with likeminded people. Nick and the team at Container Space are all about putting people first and making things simple. It’s a business I’m proud to be associated with and advocate for,” he says.

Hamish reckons the personal service is what sets Container Space apart. “It’s not a call centre or someone who doesn’t get what you need. The team make it all feel easy. I’d recommend Container Space to anyone – everyone’s short of space, and they just make it simple.”

Full throttle ahead

With his car ready to go and a big season ahead, Hamish is looking forward to what’s next. “It’s about having fun, finishing races, and seeing where it goes. I’m just stoked to be back doing what I love,” he says.

At Container Space, we’re proud to support Hamish on his journey – and we can’t wait to see what he achieves this season. Whether it’s racing stockcars or finding space solutions, we’re all about helping Kiwis make things happen.

Good luck out there, Hamish – we’ll be cheering you on from the sidelines!
